U.S. Tariffs Boost Interest in International Dividend ETFs

Last Friday the U.S. set 10% to 12.5% tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners including China, Canada and the EU, spurring interest in dividend-focused international ETFs such as XIDV, DLS and ADVE.

The U.S. last Friday imposed tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners, including China, Canada and the European Union. The tariffs cover a wide range of goods and have prompted some investors and financial advisers to reassess overseas equity exposure.

Market participants have shown renewed interest in international dividend exchange-traded funds as a way to maintain foreign equity holdings while seeking regular income. Three ETFs cited by investors and advisers are the Franklin International Dividend Booster Index ETF (XIDV), the WisdomTree International SmallCap Dividend Fund (DLS) and the Matthews Asia Dividend Active ETF (ADVE).

Franklin’s XIDV tracks the VettaFi New Frontier International Dividend Select Index. The index screens large- and midcap international stocks with the stated aims of limiting concentration and volatility risks. VettaFi is the index provider for XIDV and receives an index licensing fee for that benchmark.

WisdomTree’s DLS targets dividend-paying small-cap companies in developed markets outside the United States and Canada. The fund provides exposure to smaller companies listed in markets beyond North America and distributes dividends that investors receive as cash returns.

Matthews Asia’s ADVE is an actively managed ETF that invests in dividend-paying securities across the Asia-Pacific region. The fund can allocate across market capitalizations and selects companies it views as having steady dividend policies and stable cash flows.

Dividend payments are cash distributions to shareholders. Some investors use dividend income as a component of portfolio income, separate from capital gains.

Each of the three funds differs by region, market-cap focus and management style: XIDV concentrates on large- and midcap international dividend stocks, DLS focuses on dividend-paying small caps in developed markets outside North America, and ADVE offers an actively managed route to Asia-Pacific dividend payers. Financial advisers say they are evaluating such products while reassessing international allocations in light of the new tariffs.
