U.S. e-commerce hits $326.7B; IBUY ETF limits mega-cap weight
U.S. e-commerce reached $326.7 billion in Q1 and retail sales rose for a fifth month. IBUY tracks an index that uses modified equal-weighting to limit mega-cap concentration.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported seasonally adjusted e-commerce sales of $326.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, a 2.7% increase from the prior quarter and a 9.8% rise year over year. The Census Bureau’s Advance Retail Sales Report for June recorded a 0.2% increase in retail sales, marking a fifth consecutive monthly gain. Research from TMX VettaFi noted that e-commerce growth has outpaced the broader retail sector in recent quarters.
Global industry data indicate online shopping generated $6.42 trillion in revenue in 2025, with projections that online transaction value could exceed $8.9 trillion by 2030 and an average annual growth rate of about 6.8% through 2030.
A midyear promotional period tied to Amazon’s rescheduled Prime Day in late June coincided with competing events from other retailers. Over a four-day span, U.S. online spending rose 9.3% year over year to $26.4 billion. Promotional activity during that window increased sales in electronics, home goods and toys.
The Amplify Online Retail ETF (IBUY) tracks the EQM Online Retail Index. The index screens globally listed companies that derive a substantial portion of revenue from online retail and groups them into four segments: traditional online retailers, online travel companies, online marketplaces and omnichannel retailers. The index applies a modified equal-weighting methodology rather than a market-cap-weighted approach to reduce concentration in a small number of large firms.
As of July 16, 2026, IBUY’s top holdings included Amazon alongside mid- and small-cap companies such as Wayfair, Hims & Hers Health Inc., Etsy and TripAdvisor. The index methodology spreads allocation across a broader set of companies to include firms of different market-cap sizes and regions.
