UniCredit buys minority stake in German fintech VC Trade

UniCredit acquired a minority stake in Trade, a German VC investing in European fintech startups, to deepen ties with its fintech ecosystem.

UniCredit has acquired a minority stake in Trade, a Germany-based venture capital firm that invests in early-stage European fintech companies. The share purchase was completed this month. Neither party disclosed the size of the stake or the financial terms.

UniCredit confirmed the investment will allow closer engagement with early-stage fintech companies and help identify partnership and investment opportunities across payments, digital banking and financial infrastructure.

The bank will hold a minority position while leaving day-to-day investment decisions with Trade’s existing management. The arrangement is described as a strategic partnership that includes collaboration on sourcing deals and exploring joint initiatives with Trade’s portfolio companies.

UniCredit confirmed it will maintain a commercial distance from Trade’s independent investment activity and will not take an operational role in the firm’s management. Trade will continue to operate under its current governance and pursue its investment agenda.

UniCredit has made several fintech-focused investments and partnerships in recent years as it seeks to modernize services and expand digital offerings for retail and corporate clients across Europe. The bank operates retail networks and corporate banking divisions in multiple European markets.

Trade was founded to back startups in payments, lending, wealth management and financial infrastructure. The firm has participated in multiple funding rounds for European fintechs and works with founders on product development and market entry.

Under the ownership arrangement, Trade will continue to raise funds and make independent investments while gaining access to UniCredit’s network and client base where appropriate. Both organizations indicated they will evaluate specific collaboration projects over the coming months.
