Treasury Picks Vanguard ETF as Alternate for Trump Accounts
The U.S. Treasury named Vanguard’s Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) as an alternate investment option for Trump (530A) Accounts; Vanguard will support rollovers after Treasury guidance.
On July 2, 2026, the U.S. Treasury designated Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) as an alternate investment option for the new Trump (530A) Accounts, accounts created to allow families to save and invest on behalf of children. Vanguard indicated it intends to enable rollovers into those accounts once it receives formal implementation guidance from the Treasury.
VTI is a broad-market exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the U.S. stock market. Vanguard noted its long record of offering low-cost, diversified index funds when explaining its participation in the program.
Rodney Comegys, Chief Investment Officer of Vanguard Capital Management and Head of Global Equity at Vanguard, wrote in a statement: “For more than 50 years, Vanguard has been committed to helping investors achieve their financial goals with low-cost, broadly diversified index funds.” He added that Trump Accounts provide an opportunity for families to begin investing early on behalf of children and that Vanguard is proud the next generation will benefit from its investment approach.
Vanguard did not provide a timetable for when rollovers would begin or specify the procedures custodians and account holders will use to move existing assets into the new account type. The firm plans to continue coordinating with the Treasury as the agency issues implementation and operational details.
The Treasury’s selection of VTI adds a widely held, low-cost ETF to the list of investments available for Trump (530A) Accounts. The announcement did not include information on eligibility, contribution limits, tax treatment, or how the accounts will be administered.
