Traders Eye 2x UnitedHealth ETF UNHU
Direxion launched UNHU in March; the ETF seeks 2x daily returns of UnitedHealth after UNH rose 52% and the top basic healthcare ETF gained 12.41% over the 90 days to July 7.
Direxion launched the Direxion Daily UNH Bull 2X ETF (UNHU) in March. The leveraged ETF seeks to deliver 200% of UnitedHealth Group Inc.’s daily returns and debuted after UnitedHealth shares gained 52% and the largest basic healthcare ETF rose 12.41% over the 90 days ending July 7.
UNHU offers amplified exposure to the Dow component UnitedHealth, targeting traders who want leveraged positions in a single large-cap health insurer.
An analysis by Traders Union highlighted strong technical momentum behind UnitedHealth. “Technical indicators show strong buying momentum: the MACD signals a strong buy, and the ADX confirms persistent buying pressure,” Traders Union wrote, adding that the relative strength index sat at 58.68 with a buy signal while the Stochastic RSI at 8.69 pointed to an oversold condition, creating short-term conflicting cues. The Commodity Channel Index and Bull/Bear Power reflected dominant buying, with Bull/Bear Power in overbought territory.
Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback pointed to UnitedHealth’s scale and network advantages. “In medical insurance, we believe UnitedHealth operates with cost advantages and network effects,” Utterback observed, noting local scale in key markets gives the company greater negotiating leverage with local healthcare suppliers. Utterback also highlighted Optum Rx, UnitedHealth’s pharmacy benefit manager, saying the PBM’s scale contributes to positive moat attributes. She added that the top three PBMs process about 80% of U.S. pharmaceutical claims and that those leading PBMs no longer show significant cost gaps between them.
UNHU is designed to deliver daily results equal to twice the percentage change in UnitedHealth’s share price; leverage magnifies both gains and losses. Political and regulatory developments in the health insurance sector can affect insurers’ earnings and valuations. The ETF’s structure and sector risks make it most relevant to traders focused on short-term, higher-risk strategies.
