TIPB ETF builds TIPS ladder to match retiree liabilities

Northern Trust’s TIPB ETF ladders inflation-linked Treasuries through 2035 and makes annual principal distributions to help retirees align portfolio cash flows with scheduled expenses.

Northern Trust’s Northern Trust 2035 Inflation-Linked Distributing Ladder ETF (TIPB) holds Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities that mature in staggered dates through 2035 and makes annual principal distributions alongside coupon payments. The fund’s structure is designed to provide a known sequence of principal events that become yearly payouts to shareholders.

Liability matching refers to timing income and asset sales so funds are available when expenses are due. TIPB targets that strategy by organizing holdings so individual bonds reach maturity at set dates, creating a series of principal payments that the fund converts into annual distributions.

Most laddered bond funds reinvest principal when bonds mature to preserve the ladder. TIPB differs by distributing principal on a yearly schedule instead of automatically reinvesting every matured principal. The fund also receives TIPS coupon payments, which adjust with inflation and add periodic income that reflects changes in the Consumer Price Index.

Investors should note how ETFs differ from owning bonds to maturity. An ETF does not promise to return a specific principal amount at a given date. The net asset value of the ETF will decline over time as the fund pays out principal, and the market price of shares can trade above or below NAV. Trading on an exchange subjects returns to market fluctuations and potential brokerage costs.

The fund prospectus includes standard risk disclosures that principal can be lost, returns may vary, and the fund is not FDIC insured and offers no bank guarantee. Northern Funds Distributors, LLC is listed as the fund distributor. The prospectus and summary prospectus provide details on the ETF’s objectives, risks, charges and expenses and should be reviewed before investing.
