S&P Global to Acquire OpenZeppelin

S&P Global has agreed to buy OpenZeppelin, the blockchain security firm behind widely used smart-contract libraries and developer security tools; terms were not disclosed.

S&P Global announced an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin, the blockchain security firm known for open-source smart-contract libraries and developer security tools. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Financial terms and an expected closing date were not disclosed.

OpenZeppelin, founded in 2015, provides the open-source Contracts library and the Defender platform. The company offers security audits, monitoring and automated tooling that developers use on Ethereum and other smart-contract platforms to reduce vulnerabilities and automate incident response.

S&P Global, a provider of financial information, indices, analytics and credit ratings, plans to bring OpenZeppelin’s engineering and security offerings into its product portfolio and expand capabilities in smart-contract risk assessment and digital-asset infrastructure.

The announcement says OpenZeppelin’s team will join S&P Global and that community-facing open-source projects will continue to be maintained while commercial capabilities for institutional and enterprise clients are developed. The companies did not provide a timeline for full integration or detail potential changes to OpenZeppelin’s products.

Industry observers have noted that secure smart-contract code and reliable audit processes are increasingly part of institutional assessments of tokens, decentralized finance platforms and tokenized securities. OpenZeppelin’s engineers have taken part in audits and incident responses for several high-profile projects.

OpenZeppelin began as an open-source project to supply reusable, audited smart-contract code and later expanded into a commercial security and tooling business offering audits, monitoring and automated response services. The firms described the deal as part of a broader effort by financial-data companies to add blockchain-related technology and expertise.
