Smartstream brings AI to collateral management

Smartstream announced two Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for its Smart Collateral platform that allow approved MCP-compatible AI assistants to access integration APIs and read-only reporting for conversational queries.

One server exposes Smart Collateral’s integration APIs to an assistant, covering agreements, positions, margin activity and interest calculations. The server can pre-validate proposed movements against existing eligibility and concentration rules before execution. Write actions are disabled by default and can be enabled individually by a firm.

The second server provides read-only access to Smartstream’s reporting database. A question returns a concise answer rather than a sequence of reports, and users can assemble dashboards on demand.

Smartstream said firms can connect an MCP-compatible assistant directly to Smart Collateral to ask questions, retrieve answers and trigger controlled workflows through natural language while retaining governance and oversight.

The vendor described the servers as a response to growing operational demands in collateral management, noting that rising margin requirements and regulatory expectations have increased the need for timely, accurate data and more efficient processes.

Smartstream said the same infrastructure can support development teams by helping scaffold integration code, generate reconciliation and exception-handling routines, and prototype automation workflows. All generated code and automation remains subject to each firm’s normal review, testing and deployment controls.

The company said MCP is an open standard, allowing firms to use MCP-compatible assistants they have already approved and to keep control over data, workflows and governance rather than adopting a proprietary ecosystem.

Commercial terms and a wider rollout schedule were not included in the announcement beyond the availability of the two MCP servers and the default governance settings described.

Jason Ang, Program Manager for Smart Collateral at Smartstream, commented that collateral teams spend much of their day hunting for answers and writing integration code. He added Smartstream provides domain skills with the servers so an assistant understands collateral workflows and can deliver accurate answers more quickly than lengthy prompt tuning.
