Chip Stocks Plunge After China DUV Production Report

Semiconductor shares fell after reports a Chinese state-backed firm began mass production of immersion DUV lithography machines and investors questioned AI infrastructure spending.

Global semiconductor stocks fell sharply on Tuesday after reports that a Chinese state-backed company began mass production of immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. At the same time, investors raised questions about the scale and financing of large AI infrastructure commitments.

A regional index of Asian semiconductor shares slid as much as 7.5% on Tuesday. South Korea’s Kospi fell nearly 11%. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each lost more than 13%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Taiwan’s Taiex both dropped roughly 4%. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index moved closer to correction territory.

Memory and AI-linked storage names reversed recent gains. Kioxia Holdings tumbled about 18%, and SK Hynix surrendered a significant portion of earlier summer advances. Market participants pointed to the potential for softer demand if companies delay or scale back planned data-center and AI projects.

Announcements tied to Nvidia totaling about $750 billion in AI-related infrastructure commitments coincided with increased scrutiny of financing. Credit-market indicators reflected caution: the cost of insuring Nvidia’s debt rose, indicating greater risk concerns among some fixed-income investors.

The sell-off was uneven across the supply chain. Several Chinese suppliers of chipmaking components gained ground after the DUV production reports. Established Japanese equipment makers faced heavy losses: Nikon and Tokyo Electron each fell more than 10%.

Quarterly reports from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are due this week. Investors will look for management commentary on AI-driven demand, pricing trends and capital spending. Earnings from major technology companies, including Meta Platforms and Amazon, are also expected and may provide further information on demand for advanced chips.

Immersion DUV lithography prints fine patterns on silicon wafers and is used for many semiconductor processes. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is used for the smallest chip nodes. Mass production of immersion DUV equipment by a domestic, state-backed company could reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and alter competitive dynamics in the equipment market.

Market participants will monitor company guidance and credit-market indicators to determine whether recent volatility represents a short-term adjustment or a longer-term shift in the industry’s growth trajectory.
