Pair VOO with Two Low-Cost Vanguard ETFs

Vanguard investors can combine VOO with VXF and VXUS to add U.S. mid/small-cap and international equity exposure while keeping fees below 0.05%.

Vanguard investors can pair the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) with the Vanguard Extended Market ETF (VXF) and the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS) to broaden equity exposure. The combination adds U.S. mid- and small-cap stocks and non-U.S. equities to the S&P 500 coverage.

VOO tracks the S&P 500 and is the largest U.S.-listed ETF by assets under management. The fund provides broad large-cap U.S. coverage and has an expense ratio below 0.05%.

VXF seeks to track the S&P Completion Index, which includes U.S. companies not included in the S&P 500. The index contains mid-cap and small-cap stocks plus large U.S. companies that fall outside the S&P 500, so VXF offers a single-fund way to access those segments.

VXUS tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index, covering stocks in developed and emerging markets outside the United States. Adding VXUS brings international issuers into a portfolio built around VOO and VXF.

All three ETFs are passive index funds with expense ratios under 0.05%. The ETF structure allows intraday trading, regular rebalancing and standard tax-management techniques within brokerage accounts.

Vanguard lists more than 100 ETFs on U.S. exchanges. VOO has attracted large inflows and remains widely held. Using VOO with VXF and VXUS provides a way to cover the S&P 500 core, the remainder of the U.S. market and overseas equities across a small number of funds.
