OpenAI ad unit hits $1 billion annual run rate
OpenAI’s ads unit reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate after about 200 days and is now available in more than 40 countries.
OpenAI announced its advertising unit reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate after roughly 200 days of operation and has expanded into more than 40 countries.
The ad platform began with market testing in the United States in February and has rolled out self-service buying across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
The ads are placed for users on the free tier and for subscribers to the Go plan, giving brands access to portions of the platform’s reported 1 billion weekly active users.
Executives described the ad unit as one revenue stream among consumer subscriptions, enterprise infrastructure software and API usage fees. The company says the mix is intended to help cover the large computing costs needed to train and host advanced models.
OpenAI says the ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from the AI’s conversational output and blocked from accessing private user interactions. The company plans to add more buying options, improved measurement tools and interactive sponsored formats in the coming months.
The announcement comes as OpenAI prepares its finances ahead of a planned initial public offering and faces investor scrutiny over valuation and revenue sources.
Some competitors reacted publicly to the ad launch; Anthropic referenced the change in a Super Bowl advertisement.
The ad format places brand recommendations inside conversational discovery flows within the chat interface rather than using traditional display banners or search listings. OpenAI says this approach keeps sponsored content distinct from the AI’s generated replies while allowing brands to reach users during interactions.
OpenAI continues to expand its self-serve ad infrastructure and measurement capabilities as it scales the product globally.
