Micron slips as AI Bubble Index hits four-month low

Micron shares traded in a narrow range as the AI Bubble Index fell to 48.4, its lowest since April. Investors await Micron’s Sept. 30 earnings for revenue and margin details.

Micron Technology’s stock traded in a tight range this week as investors awaited the company’s Sept. 30 quarterly report. The share price has fallen about 25% from its high earlier this year and was near $956 after bottoming at $737 on July 29. The stock is trading just above its 50-day exponential moving average.

Market technicians have identified an inverted head-and-shoulders pattern and note a potential resistance zone near $1,250 if buying resumes.

On valuation measures, Micron’s forward price-to-earnings ratio is about 12.7, below the semiconductor sector average of roughly 22.4 and well under its five-year average of about 74.

The pullback in Micron shares has occurred alongside declines at other memory and AI-focused chipmakers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Larger chip firms such as Nvidia, AMD and Intel also recorded short-term pullbacks despite reporting strong quarterly results.

The AI Bubble Index, which tracks valuations, market concentration, momentum and technicals, sentiment and systemic risk, fell to 48.4 this week, its lowest reading since April. Analysts who follow the index say the drop reflects cooling speculative momentum in AI-related stocks.

Corporate results in the sector have been mixed. Dell and HPE reported continued customer spending. Nvidia posted third-quarter revenue of $41.5 billion, a 346% year-over-year increase, and management projected fourth-quarter revenue near $50 billion.

Sell-side analysts have a consensus price target around $1,295 for Micron. Firms including DA Davidson, Wolfe Research, Raymond James and Susquehanna have issued higher targets or positive coverage ahead of the Sept. 30 report.

Investors will focus on revenue trends, gross margins and memory pricing in Micron’s report for indications of demand. Until the company releases results, market participants will balance technical signals, valuation metrics and sentiment indicators such as the AI Bubble Index when determining positions in Micron and other AI-linked stocks.
