Intermediate muni ETF yields 3.31% amid heavy issuance
ALPS Intermediate Municipal Bond ETF (MNBD) posts a trailing 12-month yield of 3.31% as municipal issuance nears $600 billion and investors absorb new supply.
The ALPS Intermediate Municipal Bond ETF (MNBD) has a trailing 12-month yield of 3.31%. The fund is actively managed and marked its fourth anniversary in May.
Municipal bond performance has been muted without Federal Reserve rate cuts. Issuance is forecast to approach $600 billion this year, and retail investors, separately managed accounts and ETFs have taken much of the new supply.
MNBD holds intermediate-term municipal securities, which reduces sensitivity to long-term interest-rate moves compared with longer-dated funds. The fund offers after-tax income with a shorter duration profile than long-maturity municipal funds.
Federal tax exemptions for municipal interest remain in place. State and local tax codes could change following the 2026 midterm elections, with some revisions potentially taking effect in 2027 and altering the state tax treatment of certain bonds.
Market participants cite duration management, inflation, oil-price swings and uncertainty about future Federal Reserve leadership as factors shaping fixed-income positioning. Political and policy changes at the state and local level could affect demand and pricing for municipal debt.
Municipal bonds have historically shown lower default rates than corporate debt. Advisors evaluate municipal ETFs such as MNBD based on yield, credit quality and duration when building fixed-income allocations.
