HSBC selects Nasdaq Calypso for global markets processing

HSBC has chosen Nasdaq’s Calypso platform to standardize front-to-back processing for derivatives, collateral and trade operations across its global markets and securities services.

HSBC has selected Nasdaq’s Calypso platform to standardize and modernize processing for parts of its global markets and securities services businesses, the bank and Nasdaq announced this week. The agreement covers deployment of Calypso’s front-to-back capabilities for derivatives, collateral and related trade processing across multiple business lines.

The platform will be rolled out in phases across HSBC’s operating regions. The initial phase will focus on interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives, trade capture, clearing connectivity and collateral management. Subsequent phases will add more product types and back-office functions. Nasdaq will provide software licenses, implementation services and ongoing support for the programme.

Nasdaq will integrate Calypso with HSBC’s existing front-end trading systems, clearing links and custody systems and connect the platform to clearing houses, market data feeds and custody networks used by the bank. The vendor highlighted Calypso’s capabilities for processing over-the-counter and cleared derivatives, managing collateral and margin, and providing integrated risk analytics and confirmations.

HSBC described the project as an effort to reduce fragmentation in its trading and post-trade systems, improve straight-through processing and standardize operational workflows. The bank expects the platform to consolidate trade data into a single technology stack to support regulatory reporting and risk calculations and to enable more consistent reconciliations and margining processes.

Project teams from HSBC and Nasdaq will handle data migration, integration testing and regulatory compliance checks during the phased deployment. The rollout will include parallel running of legacy systems during transition periods to limit operational disruption and to validate processing and reporting outputs.

Calypso is a capital markets platform used for trade lifecycle management, collateral and margin operations and risk reporting; vendors generally supply professional services for implementation, data conversion and testing. HSBC has been carrying out technology upgrades and operational simplification across its global businesses. An HSBC spokesperson commented, “We selected Calypso to create a common operating environment for key products and to strengthen end-to-end processing across our markets and securities services businesses.” A Nasdaq representative added, “We look forward to partnering with HSBC to deliver a modern, scalable platform that supports its global workflows and connectivity needs.”
