Hedgeweek interviews SS&C on hedge fund operations
Hedgeweek spoke with SS&C about how the firm supports hedge funds with automation, data consolidation, cloud adoption and regulatory reporting.
In a recent one-on-one interview, Hedgeweek and SS&C discussed how the technology and services provider supports hedge funds and alternative asset managers in operations, reporting and risk analytics.
SS&C representatives outlined the main pressures facing hedge funds: tighter margins, growing volumes of data and expanding regulatory requirements. They described how firms are prioritizing automation of middle- and back-office workflows, greater adoption of cloud infrastructure and improved connectivity between front-office systems and operational platforms to reduce manual reconciliation and speed reporting cycles.
Fund administration and managed services remain central to SS&C’s engagement model. The firm handles tasks such as net asset value calculation, investor reporting, trade processing and regulatory filings so portfolio managers can focus on investment decisions. Clients are increasingly choosing a mix of software and outsourced services instead of building systems in-house, citing scalability and lower operational risk.
On technology, SS&C described efforts to consolidate data from multiple sources and to provide standardized data models to support performance and risk analytics. The firm reported client demand for application programming interfaces and integration tools that allow data to be fed into analytics, compliance and portfolio construction systems.
SS&C discussed a phased approach to cloud deployment in which selected services migrate to cloud infrastructure while critical controls and governance remain on tightly managed platforms. The firm also described automated reporting tools and audit trails that capture transaction-level detail for external reporting, investor transparency and internal compliance checks.
Representatives framed the company’s offering around modular services that clients can scale up or down. They identified fee automation and reconciliation as areas where operational efficiency can lower costs. SS&C also noted client interest in performance attribution and risk measurement tools that integrate administrator data to provide a single source for portfolio metrics.
Background provided during the interview noted SS&C is headquartered in the United States and serves asset managers, hedge funds, insurers and other financial institutions globally. The discussion focused on how managers, especially smaller and mid-sized firms, are adjusting operations and technology to handle larger data volumes and greater investor reporting demands.
