Hedge funds see eighth month of inflows as SS&C indices rise

Hedge funds logged an eighth straight month of net inflows in September as SS&C GlobeOp’s Capital Movement Index rose 0.65% and the performance index returned 0.83% in August.

Hedge funds attracted an eighth consecutive month of net inflows in September, with SS&C GlobeOp’s Capital Movement Index rising 0.65% to 133.10 points. The index is up 5.50 points over the past 12 months.

The Capital Movement Index records net subscriptions and redemptions processed on SS&C GlobeOp’s administration platform and expresses those flows as a percentage of assets under administration. SS&C said the September reading reflects reconciled subscription and redemption activity from funds administered on its platform.

SS&C estimates the GlobeOp platform represents about 10% of global hedge fund assets, giving the indices a sizable sample across multiple strategies. The company constructs the indices from reconciled fund data used to calculate net asset values and anonymizes individual fund information through aggregation.

The SS&C GlobeOp Hedge Fund Performance Index, an asset-weighted measure of aggregate returns across funds on the platform, posted a flash gross return of 0.83% for August. Flash estimates are published on the ninth business day of each month; interim and final results are released later.

Bill Stone, chairman and chief executive of SS&C Technologies, noted the September reading and added that investors continue to allocate to hedge funds for diversification, attractive risk-adjusted returns and downside protection.

SS&C has scheduled the next Capital Movement Index update for October 13. The monthly indices provide an early, data-driven view of investor demand and short-term performance across funds administered on the GlobeOp platform.
