Through July 6, 2026, six of nine major global indexes on the watchlist are higher year-to-date. Japan’s Nikkei 225 leads with a 38.5% gain. India’s BSE SENSEX is the weakest, down 8.1%.
The watchlist tracks nine benchmarks: the S&P 500 (United States), TSX (Canada), FTSE 100 (U.K.), DAXK (Germany), CAC 40 (France), Nikkei 225 (Japan), Shanghai Composite (China), Hang Seng (Hong Kong) and BSE SENSEX (India). Canada’s TSX is up 11.0% and the U.S. S&P 500 has risen 10.1% year-to-date. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng has fallen 7.9%; the remaining indexes show mixed results.
A table accompanying the watchlist shows each index’s current value, its all-time peak, the date of that peak and the percentage gap from that record. Visuals compare recent market cycles and longer runs to place current levels in historical context.
One chart uses February 3, 2020 as a reference for the most recent recession. For recovery patterns, several indexes are aligned on March 9, 2009 and indexed at 800 to show performance since the financial crisis lows. Individual low dates differ: the S&P 500, TSX, CAC 40 and BSE SENSEX hit lows on March 9, 2009; the Nikkei 225 on March 10, 2009; the DAXK on March 6, 2009; the FTSE on March 3, 2009; the Shanghai Composite on November 4, 2008; and the Hang Seng on October 27, 2008.
Another chart starts on October 9, 2007, a prior closing high for the S&P 500, and a long-term series begins at the turn of the century with indexes indexed at 800.
The DAXK is tracked as a price-only index rather than the dividend-inclusive DAX so the measure is consistent with the other indexes, which do not include dividends.
The watchlist includes examples of single-country ETFs for market exposure: SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) for the United States, iShares MSCI Canada ETF (EWC) for Canada, WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ) for Japan, WisdomTree Europe Hedged Equity Fund (HEDJ) for Europe, KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) for Chinese internet stocks, iShares MSCI India ETF (INDA) for India and iShares MSCI Hong Kong ETF (EWH) for Hong Kong.
The data and charts provide a snapshot of relative market performance across major economies through the latest close on July 6, 2026, and show how current levels compare with historical peaks and troughs.
