The watchlist tracks the S&P 500, TSX, FTSE 100, DAXK, CAC 40, Nikkei 225, Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng and BSE SENSEX. All indexes are measured on a price-only basis, excluding dividends, to keep comparisons consistent across markets.
Charts accompanying the watchlist align indexes on shared reference dates for comparison. One chart indexes each market to 800 on March 9, 2009 to compare performance since the post-2008/2009 lows. A separate view uses October 9, 2007 as a starting point to show performance from that earlier peak. The watchlist also marks the NBER recession start date of February 3, 2020 when noting recent downturns.
Individual low points used to align longer-term recoveries are: S&P 500, TSX, CAC 40 and BSE SENSEX on March 9, 2009; Nikkei 225 on March 10, 2009; DAXK on March 6, 2009; FTSE 100 on March 3, 2009; Shanghai Composite on November 4, 2008; and Hang Seng on October 27, 2008.
