Exante launches €1M Gekko Fund for open-source maintenance
Exante launched the Gekko Fund with €1 million to support development, security updates and ongoing maintenance for open-source software projects.
Exante announced the Gekko Fund, a dedicated €1 million pool to provide financial support to developers and teams that maintain open-source software. The fund is intended to finance development work and ongoing upkeep for public code projects.
The firm said the fund targets contributors and teams working on code that requires continued maintenance or further development. Exante framed the initiative as an effort to supply predictable, project-level funding rather than one-off donations.
The initial €1 million allocation will be distributed through grants and other support mechanisms designed to help projects cover development, security patches and maintenance costs. Exante plans to work with project maintainers and contributors to identify needs and structure awards that align with measurable development outcomes.
Priority will be given to projects with clear governance, active maintainer teams and demonstrable public utility. The fund is open to small teams that sustain critical libraries as well as larger projects that support enterprise and infrastructure stacks.
Software developers and industry observers note that many widely used libraries and tools depend on a small number of volunteer maintainers and that inconsistent funding can lead to delays in security fixes and feature work. Funding for open-source projects currently comes from corporate sponsorships, foundations, crowdfunding and volunteer contributions, and private funds and corporate sponsorship programs have increased in recent years.
Exante said it will monitor the impact of grant awards and adjust the fund’s approach based on recipient feedback and project needs. The company positioned the Gekko Fund as one element of its support for the ecosystems of tools and libraries used by companies and developers.
