Ex-Goldman Trader Sheriff Leaves Balyasny at 33
Former Goldman Sachs macro trader Stanley Sheriff has reportedly left Balyasny Asset Management at 33 and is taking time away from the hedge fund industry.
Former Goldman Sachs macro trader Stanley Sheriff has reportedly left Balyasny Asset Management at age 33 and is taking time away from the hedge fund industry. He is not believed to be seeking another position, and his longer-term plans are unclear.
Sheriff joined Balyasny in Dubai in May 2025 after spending less than a month at Taula Asset Management, a macro hedge fund founded by former Millennium portfolio manager Diego Megia. His move between the firms highlighted competition among multi-strategy hedge funds for experienced macro traders.
Before joining the hedge fund industry, Sheriff spent four years at Goldman Sachs, from 2014 to 2018. He graduated from the London School of Economics with a first-class degree and went on to build an eight-year career on the buy side.
Neither Sheriff nor Balyasny responded to requests for comment.
Sheriff’s departure follows several other exits from Balyasny. London-based portfolio manager James Watson reportedly returned to Millennium Management after overseeing a 20-person investment team. Former Goldman Sachs traders Aditya Singh and George Tyrrell have also left the firm.
Regulatory filings show that Peter Blandford, a former portfolio manager at Symmetry, departed Balyasny on Oct. 9. Large multi-strategy hedge funds continue to compete for portfolio managers and traders with established investment records.
