EPSG issues Version 11 of SEPA Standardisation Volume

EPSG has published Version 11 of its SEPA Payments Standardisation Volume, updating ISO 20022 guidance for credit transfers and direct debits across the Single Euro Payments Area.

The European Payments Standards Group (EPSG) has published Version 11 of the SEPA Payments Standardisation Volume. The document provides updated technical guidance for banks, payment service providers and vendors that process SEPA credit transfers and direct debits.

The new edition revises implementation rules, clarifies message usage and updates examples and validation guidance to reflect recent market practice and regulatory requirements. It covers the ISO 20022 payment message formats used in SEPA processing and includes practical examples intended to reduce interoperability issues between participants.

Version 11 sets out message structure, mandatory and optional data elements, and business rules for transaction handling, error management and remittance information. The release contains revised XML usage examples, expanded validation checks and added guidance on exception handling.

The volume addresses the correct use of identifiers such as IBAN and creditor identifiers and provides updated sample messages for system configuration and testing. The guidance is intended to make message interpretation more consistent and to lower the risk of processing errors across different infrastructures and national schemes in the SEPA area.

Banks, payment processors, corporate treasuries and software vendors are expected to review the updated volume and assess the impact on their systems and test plans. Typical implementation work includes updating configuration, message validation routines and test cases. National payment infrastructures and industry testing bodies commonly reference the EPSG publication when defining conformance testing and migration timetables.

SEPA harmonises euro-denominated retail payments across participating countries by replacing national formats and rules with common standards. EPSG produces the Standardisation Volume to provide technical and operational detail that complements legal and rule frameworks maintained by other European payment authorities. Versioned updates reflect alignment between market practice, technology changes and supervisory expectations and are published to guide practitioners through required and recommended implementation steps.
