DE Shaw Amasses $1B Stake in Sysco
DE Shaw has accumulated a stake worth more than $1 billion in Sysco as the food distributor plans board changes, targets AI-driven savings and moves to buy Jetro.
DE Shaw has built a stake exceeding $1 billion in Sysco as the company prepares board changes, expands use of artificial intelligence and automation, and advances a planned acquisition of Jetro Restaurant Depot.
The New York investment firm has held Sysco shares for about a decade, according to people familiar with the matter, though the size of its current position had not previously been disclosed. Sysco’s market value is about $40 billion. The company expects to add two directors next month with experience in technology, e-commerce and food-service distribution to support operational and digital projects.
Sysco has identified AI and automation as sources of cost savings and efficiency. Management projects roughly $100 million in savings in fiscal 2027 from AI, automation and wider process improvements. Company officials have credited DE Shaw with helping accelerate adoption of AI tools across the business.
Potential uses of AI at food distributors include demand forecasting, automated ordering, and optimization of logistics and inventory. Sysco’s planned board additions are intended to expand in-house expertise to scale those capabilities and oversee related technology investments.
Sysco is moving forward with a planned acquisition of Jetro Restaurant Depot, a deal reported at about $2.9 billion. DE Shaw is expected to assist with financing for the purchase, which would affect the company’s capital structure during integration.
DE Shaw has engaged with corporate boards in the past and has pushed for changes at companies including Air Products, Riot Platforms, Verisk Analytics and FedEx. The firm manages about $100 billion in assets and describes itself as an investment and technology development firm; it has expressed support for Sysco’s efficiency and technology plans.
Sysco will appoint the two new directors next month and continues work on the Jetro transaction. The company is proceeding with its timetable for technology implementation and the planned acquisition.
