Cleverbridge completes France’s first passkey Revolut payment
Cleverbridge executed France’s first merchant-side passkey purchase charged to a Revolut-issued card, using passwordless authentication during an online checkout.
Cleverbridge executed what has been reported as France’s first merchant-side passkey purchase charged to a Revolut-issued card. The payment was authorised through a passwordless authentication flow during an online checkout.
Cleverbridge handled the checkout and payment processing while the card used to fund the purchase was issued by Revolut. The buyer approved the charge using a passkey credential stored on their device rather than entering a password. The authentication occurred at the point of sale within the online checkout flow, and the payment was routed through standard card networks to the Revolut account linked to the card.
Passkeys are digital credentials based on public-key cryptography and standards such as FIDO2 and WebAuthn. They let users confirm actions with a device gesture — for example, a fingerprint, face scan or device PIN — while the private key remains on the device. In this transaction the passkey served to demonstrate the cardholder’s consent to the payment.
The companies involved did not disclose a timeline for wider rollout or whether the same approach will be offered to other merchants, card types or markets. No additional operational details about the integration were provided.
Regulators and payment networks have been encouraging stronger authentication for online card-not-present transactions to address fraud. Passkeys can be used alongside existing fraud checks and network rules as a device-bound method of verifying a cardholder during checkout.
Cleverbridge provides ecommerce software and payment services for merchants selling digital goods and subscriptions. Revolut is a digital banking platform that issues cards and manages consumer accounts across multiple countries.
Further technical specifics about how the passkey authentication was implemented and whether it will be extended to more customers in France or elsewhere were not disclosed.
