Citi launches SWIFT-powered instant cross-border payments
Citi has activated instant payments on the SWIFT network across multiple markets, allowing corporate and institutional clients faster settlement and improved payment tracking.
Citi has rolled out instant cross-border payments using SWIFT’s instant payment capabilities across multiple markets, enabling quicker fund transfers for corporate and institutional clients and providing clearer visibility on payment status.
The service uses SWIFT’s instant rails combined with Citi’s global payments infrastructure to move funds across participating corridors without the multi-day delays associated with traditional correspondent banking. The rollout supports a range of currencies and routes payments that can be settled far faster where local clearing systems and correspondent partners enable instant or near-instant settlement.
Citi is offering the capability to corporate treasuries, multinational corporations and financial institutions that require rapid liquidity movement and predictable settlement timing. Transactions processed through the service include lower-value, higher-frequency cross-border payments when local systems support immediate settlement.
The service includes enhanced tracking and status information using newer SWIFT messaging standards. That tracking is designed to give treasurers clearer confirmation of cash positions soon after payment initiation and to simplify reconciliation for corporate clients. Citi has also built standard compliance and screening checks into the payment flow to maintain regulatory controls while accelerating settlement.
Citi described the launch as part of a broader modernization of its cross-border payments capabilities and said the instant option complements existing rails used for high-value and more complex transactions. The bank’s implementation combines its internal payments routing, custody and treasury services with the SWIFT connectivity layer to manage liquidity and to limit the need for pre-funding in every market where possible.
Availability depends on local clearing infrastructure and regulatory permissions, so the instant service is limited to corridors where those conditions are met. Citi’s network connectivity and local correspondent relationships extend the reach of SWIFT’s instant rails into markets where immediate settlement is operationally feasible.
