CFP Board delays 40-hour CE requirement to Oct. 1, 2027

The CFP Board pushed the start of a new 40-hour continuing education requirement for CFPs to Oct. 1, 2027, raising the two-year total from 30 to 40 hours.

The CFP Board delayed the start of a new continuing education requirement that raises certified financial planners’ CE to 40 hours per two-year cycle, moving the effective date to Oct. 1, 2027. The board had planned to implement the change in the first quarter of 2027 but revised the timeline last month.

Under the revised rules, CFP certificants must complete 40 hours of CE every two years, up from the current 30 hours. The update retains a two-hour ethics requirement, allows up to five hours of eligible practice management CE to count toward the total, and permits certificants to carry over up to 10 hours of eligible general CE credits beginning Oct. 1, 2027.

The board ties each two-year renewal cycle to a certificant’s birthday month, so the 40-hour requirement will take effect for each monthly cohort at the start of its next two-year certification period. Implementation will be phased in by cohort rather than taking effect for all certificants on a single date.

The CE changes are part of seven updates the board approved in January. One revision, an accelerated pathway for certified investment management analysts to earn the CFP designation, was implemented earlier this year. The board plans to roll out the remaining revisions, including changes to pro bono service rules and what qualifies as professional experience for CFP candidates, by the end of 2027. A working group is evaluating whether to remove the bachelor’s degree requirement for certification.

K. Dane Snowden, CEO of the CFP Board, described the effort as ‘a thoughtful, deliberate, rigorous and deeply engaged two-year journey to reach this important update to our competency standards’ during a January webinar announcing the changes.

A Sept. 30 informational letter to CE sponsors outlined that the board will have authority to designate mandatory CE topics when warranted and set out the carryover provision and other technical details sponsors must follow when certifying credits under the higher-hour requirement.

CE providers continue to offer standard programs that qualify for credit. One longstanding sponsor runs a monthly 10-question quiz that grants one CE hour for each successful completion; its active quiz archive currently holds 21 offerings and is scheduled to reset to 12 at year-end. Certificants and sponsors will need to monitor the board’s updated rules to ensure courses meet the new eligibility criteria.

The revised timeline gives certificants and CE providers additional time to adjust course offerings and compliance systems before the 40-hour requirement becomes mandatory for each cohort beginning Oct. 1, 2027.
