Carronade to stop new investors after 2026
Carronade Capital will close its flagship fund to new investors after 2026 as assets reach about $3.7bn; founder Dan Gropper cited preserving flexibility and long-term performance.
Carronade Capital Management will stop accepting new investors into its flagship strategy after 2026 as assets under management approach $3.7 billion. Founder Dan Gropper wrote that the firm aims to preserve investment flexibility and prioritize long-term performance.
In an investor letter, the Connecticut-headquartered credit-focused hedge fund announced the flagship will close to new capital at year-end 2026. From 2027, only existing investors will be allowed to add money. The firm stated the strategy has reached roughly 60% of its estimated long-term capacity, leaving room for organic growth without stretching the approach.
Since launching in July 2020 with about $50 million, the fund has grown to roughly $3.7 billion. Carronade reported annualized returns of about 10.5% since inception and returned 7.6% in the first half of 2026, compared with an average 4.7% gain for multi-strategy credit peers, according to industry data cited by the firm.
Carronade began as a credit specialist and expanded into equity activism and event-driven investing. The firm has taken positions in corporate situations including the restructuring of power producer Talen Energy, an activist campaign involving Cannae Holdings, and investments in both the debt and equity of Viasat. About half of Carronade’s investment professionals previously worked at Elliott Investment Management. Gropper’s background includes roles at Elliott, Fortress and Aurelius Capital Management.
Fortress Investment Group provided $100 million in early backing and took a stake in the management company; Carronade’s partners later repurchased that stake. The firm cited sustained investor interest and its own capacity limits when restricting new inflows, mirroring a broader pattern of hedge funds limiting new capital to protect strategy capacity.
