Blue Owl Forms Golden Cross as Short Interest Nears 16%
Blue Owl rose from $7.60 in April to $11.85 and formed a golden cross on Aug. 14; short interest near 16% raises short-squeeze risk.
Blue Owl’s stock climbed from $7.60 in April to about $11.85. On Aug. 14 the 50-day and 200-day weighted moving averages crossed, forming a golden cross. Short interest stands at about 16% of the float.
The golden cross occurred when the 50-day and 200-day weighted moving averages crossed. The stock cleared resistance at $10.55, moved above the Supertrend indicator and formed a bullish flag. Technical analysts cite a near-term target of about $15, roughly 27% above current levels. A move below $10.50 would invalidate the bullish outlook.
The shares hit a low of $7.60 in April after a sharp sell-off linked to operational strains in the private capital sector. The recent recovery has paralleled gains at peers: Ares Management has rallied more than 50% from its lows, Apollo Global Management is up about 35% and trading near $134, and KKR and Blackstone have posted double-digit gains.
Last year the firm attempted to merge its publicly traded business development companies, sold about $600 million in a secondary portfolio near par and limited some redemptions.
In the second quarter the firm reported assets under management of more than $319 billion, a 12% increase. Permanent capital rose 10% to $225 billion. Real assets account for roughly 30% of AUM and revenue from that segment increased 27%. Total revenue climbed 7% to $753 million. Direct lending’s share of AUM fell to about 35% from nearly half earlier in the year.
The firm reported: “As we look at the first half of 2026 across Blue Owl, a period spanning the most acute headline noise and elevated redemptions for non-traded BDCs, we raised more than $16.5 billion of equity capital across the firm or more than 40% of our last 12-month total.”
Blue Owl’s forward price-to-earnings ratio is about 13, below the S&P 500 average near 22. A short interest around 16% represents a sizable portion of the float and can amplify price moves if short positions are covered.
Market participants will watch whether the technical patterns hold and whether further capital-raising supports higher valuations. A clear move above about $15 would extend gains; a slide below $10.50 would call the bullish setup into question.
