BCEM ETF targets early inflection points in emerging markets

Baron Capital’s BCEM ETF, managed by Michael Kass, uses forward-looking active selection and bottom-up research to identify early company inflection points in emerging markets.

Baron Capital’s Baron Emerging Markets Select ETF (BCEM), managed by Michael Kass, uses a forward-looking active strategy and bottom-up research to identify early company-level inflection points in emerging markets. The fund seeks firms whose revenue growth or pricing power trends may precede changes in share prices.

BCEM departs from strategies that rely on backward-looking screens or market-cap-weighted indexes, which can increase exposure to over-leveraged state-owned companies and slow-moving incumbents. The fund employs a concentrated, liquid selection framework aimed at capturing high-impact growth opportunities across different regions.

The investment team narrows the universe of thousands of listed companies to a smaller set of names that show early signs of durable change. Analysts focus on firms with strong balance sheets and meaningful pricing power to limit exposure to fragile capital structures.

The ETF structure provides intraday liquidity and operational efficiency. Active management enables the team to adjust holdings as company fundamentals or regional policies shift.

Baron cites shifts in global trade patterns, geopolitical realignments and faster technology adoption as factors changing where growth appears in emerging markets. The firm says those structural changes make a forward-looking, research-driven approach distinct from market-weighted strategies.

In a portfolio managers Q&A, Kass said, “Our forward-looking orientation is a key distinction. We want to identify inflection points early-a trend that’s likely to lead to material value creation through rising pricing power or revenue growth-before they are reflected in market pricing.”

The fund includes risk controls intended to reduce exposure to high leverage and weak business models and targets market leaders with resilient financial positions. Kass has overseen Baron’s broader emerging-markets strategy since 2011.

Baron describes BCEM’s approach as combining concentrated stock selection, intraday liquidity and active research, with an emphasis on companies that can maintain performance through market cycles.
