Banks tighten consumer scam controls as AI rises

Finextra and Outseer will host a webinar on consumer scam controls as AI-powered attacks and scam-as-a-service rise; losses are projected at $55.3 billion by 2030.

Finextra and fraud-prevention firm Outseer will host a webinar that examines consumer scam controls as AI-powered attacks and scam-as-a-service increase. The session will draw on Outseer consumer survey data covering more than 15 markets and will feature Outseer principal product manager Martyn Higson, with Finextra researcher Sharon Kimathi as moderator. Registration details are available via Finextra.

Outseer’s survey finds rising consumer concern about automated and outsourced fraud that can scale quickly through online channels and messaging apps. The data will be used to report where customers want more protection and clearer bank intervention.

Speakers will review controls across the five stages of a scam: pre-attack, consumer compromise, transaction, receipt and post-attack. The panel will compare technical defences such as detection algorithms and transaction monitoring with behavioural approaches that influence how customers respond to suspicious contacts.

The webinar will address two threat trends. Scam-as-a-service supplies tools and infrastructure for fraudsters, while AI techniques enable more convincing social engineering at scale. Organisers plan to focus on controls that shape consumer behaviour as well as measures that stop malicious transactions.

Panelists will consider specific bank interventions, including enhanced pre-attack intelligence to block fraudulent campaigns, real-time transaction checks to flag risky payments, contextual alerts to prompt customer verification, and faster recovery processes after losses. The session will present which combinations of measures have reduced successful scams across different markets.

Outseer’s survey will be used to map consumer expectations against current industry practice and to highlight gaps where customers expect quicker action or clearer guidance. The research covers a range of demographics and regions to provide comparative insight for institutions operating across multiple jurisdictions.

The webinar is aimed at fraud teams, product managers and compliance officers seeking practical strategies to reduce consumer losses and improve customer trust.
