Amazon commits $13B to India as AI and AWS demand accelerates
Amazon will invest an additional $13 billion in India to expand AI and AWS cloud infrastructure, raising planned spending to $48 billion for 2026–2030.
Amazon announced an additional $13 billion investment in India to expand artificial intelligence and AWS cloud infrastructure, bringing its planned spending to $48 billion for 2026–2030. The funds are intended to increase data centre capacity, provide managed AI services and developer tools, and broaden access to custom AI chips for startups, enterprises and government organisations.
The commitment follows a December 2025 pledge of $35 billion and is focused primarily on AI and cloud growth. Amazon plans to expand AWS data centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad to meet rising demand from businesses, startups and public sector organisations building and scaling AI applications.
The company will continue investing in its operations network that supports e-commerce and quick commerce across India. Amazon plans to open more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 new last-mile delivery stations this year to speed deliveries, with a focus on tier 3 and tier 4 cities. Amazon’s operations network already serves every postal code in the country.
Amazon highlighted a programme called Sammaan to support delivery associates with scholarships for their children, access to government benefits, financial inclusion measures, insurance coverage and on-road safety initiatives. A portion of a recently announced $300 million investment in operations and associate well-being in India will fund scaling these programmes.
The company reported that cumulative investments in India from 2010 through 2030 will exceed $88 billion. Amazon said it has digitised 12 million small businesses, enabled more than $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, supported 2.8 million jobs and trained over 10 million Indians in cloud skills. Through 2030, Amazon committed to supporting 3.8 million jobs, enabling $80 billion in cumulative exports, extending AI capabilities to 15 million small businesses and providing AI education to 4 million government school students.
The announcement comes as Amazon runs its 12th annual Prime Day, a four-day shopping event across more than 35 countries, and after the company introduced an AI-powered shopping assistant, Alexa for Shopping, in May.
Amazon reported it has become water positive in India ahead of a 2027 target, stating it returns more water to communities than it uses across its direct operations, including offices, fulfilment centres and data centres. The expansion of data centre infrastructure takes place amid growing scrutiny of the environmental effects of larger cloud and AI investments.
