ALPS limits ETF launches to match sales capacity

SS&C ALPS Advisors, which manages 26 ETFs and about $22 billion, ties new fund launches to whether its small distribution team can support them.

In a recent interview, Paul Baiocchi, head of fund sales and strategy at SS&C ALPS Advisors, said the firm links new ETF launches to the capacity of its distribution team.

ALPS manages 26 exchange-traded funds with roughly $22 billion in assets. Its distribution group is small and regional rather than a nationwide wholesaler network. The firm maintains servicing for its funds, but pitches for new strategies arrive regularly and require review before joining the lineup.

Baiocchi warned that adding funds too quickly can leave wholesalers unable to support them and can force advisers to field conflicting recommendations from different teams.

He noted products developed without sales input can create a disconnect between issuers and advisers, comparing disconnected product development to researchers working ‘in a lab somewhere with beakers and Bunsen burners.’ When wholesalers do not understand a product, selling it becomes difficult and may reduce support for other funds the team covers.

ALPS evaluates potential additions by weighing whether the sales team can take on another product without stretching resources. The firm does not build strategies only because competitors have filed similar products; it relies on direct feedback from its sales force to choose which funds to develop.

Baiocchi drew a distinction between that distribution discipline and the broader market debate over speculative offerings such as leveraged single-stock funds or prediction-market-style products, arguing the market should decide which products survive rather than issuers policing one another.

Advisers increasingly face client questions about themes that dominate headlines. To answer those questions, advisers often use thematic research to explain concepts and risks without attempting to predict short-term market moves. That approach helps advisers discuss topics such as electrification without making timing calls.

SS&C ALPS Advisors says the scale of its 26-fund, $22 billion lineup requires selective growth tied to sales capacity and ongoing servicing.
