Advisors Prepare for Clients to Bring ChatGPT Advice
Financial advisors are preparing to review ChatGPT-generated investment suggestions with clients and explain how they fit-or do not fit-their financial plans.
Financial advisors expect more clients to arrive with investment ideas generated by AI chatbots, according to responses published Oct. 16, 2026, in an Ask an Advisor article. The advisors described these discussions as opportunities to review the assumptions behind an AI response and compare it with a client’s goals, finances and broader plan.
Jason Stephens of Evertern Wealth in Naples, Florida, has worked in the industry for 25 years. In an email, he described technology as a major influence on how clients find information and make financial decisions.
“Artificial intelligence is arguably one of the most significant developments we have seen, and I believe it will fundamentally change our industry for the better,” Stephens wrote.
Stephens wrote that his firm is increasingly seeing clients arrive with AI-generated recommendations. “I asked ChatGPT about this strategy, and here is what it recommended,” clients tell him, according to Stephens.
His response is generally positive. He encourages clients to learn about their options, ask questions and challenge the firm’s recommendations. “I would much rather have a client who is actively engaged in their financial future than one who simply follows advice without understanding it,” he wrote.
Advisors can examine the facts and assumptions used to generate an AI answer, then explain how the recommendation applies to a specific client. A chatbot may provide a direct response without accounting for a person’s full financial situation, investment goals or existing plan.
Marcos Segrera of Evensky & Katz Wealth Management summarized his approach in the article: “Bring AI to the meeting. I’ll bring the context.”
