AAIB adopts IBM Safer Payments to strengthen fraud detection
AAIB will deploy IBM’s Safer Payments to monitor card, ATM, point-of-sale and online transactions in real time, starting with card and e-commerce traffic.
AAIB has adopted IBM’s Safer Payments platform to detect and prevent fraudulent activity across card, ATM, point-of-sale and online payment channels. The bank plans to integrate the platform with its transaction processing systems to analyze payments in real time and flag suspicious behavior, AAIB confirmed.
AAIB will roll out the platform in phases, beginning with card and e-commerce traffic and extending to other payment types as integration work proceeds. Implementation will include connecting transaction feeds and integrating with existing case management workflows.
IBM’s Safer Payments applies machine learning and rule-based analytics to live transaction streams to produce instant risk scores and alerts. The platform supports on-premises, cloud and hybrid deployments and feeds alerts into investigation and case-handling systems.
AAIB selected the solution to enhance customer protection and reduce the time needed to detect and respond to fraudulent transactions. The bank expects the platform to lower false positives by combining adaptive models with contextual business rules and to improve the efficiency of its fraud operations teams.
Deployment involves collaboration among the bank’s fraud team, payments operations group and IBM technical specialists to tune detection models to local cardholder behavior and regional fraud patterns, a bank spokesperson confirmed. IBM added that Safer Payments is already used by other banks and payment processors to monitor multiple payment types and to support transaction-monitoring obligations.
Planned implementation tasks include establishing model training and validation routines, setting thresholds and case-handling procedures, and monitoring performance metrics to adjust model parameters and balance interception rates with customer friction.
The adoption reflects a wider industry trend of financial institutions upgrading fraud controls in response to growth in digital payments and more sophisticated fraud attempts. Safer Payments combines scalable stream processing with analytics and orchestration features to enable real-time decisioning while retaining audit trails and reporting for regulators and internal risk functions.
