CMC Markets launches Spectre zero-leverage spread betting

CMC Markets has opened Spectre, a zero-leverage spread-betting account for UK retail clients after a professional rollout; the account uses client capital and removes overnight financing.

CMC Markets has launched Spectre, a zero-leverage spread-betting account now available to retail clients in the UK after an initial professional-only rollout. CMC Markets is a FTSE 250 firm with more than 36 years in financial markets.

Spectre is structured as a spread-betting account that uses clients’ own capital and does not provide leverage. CMC said the account carries no overnight financing charges that apply to leveraged products.

Company materials state that in the UK spread betting can be exempt from capital gains tax and stamp duty. CMC reported strong retail interest after the professional launch and said a waiting list prompted the wider rollout to retail clients.

Product documentation indicated a pricing profile based on asset fees rather than financing income, noting a flat annual account maintenance fee of roughly 0.70% plus standard spreads.

Lord Peter Cruddas, founder and chief executive officer of CMC Markets, commented: “Following strong demand and a growing waiting list, our Spectre account is now available to all clients, including retail investors. By removing leverage and financing costs, the Spectre account offers a simpler, cost-effective, and tax-efficient way to trade, without capital gains tax and stamp duty.” Laurence Booth, global head of markets at CMC Markets, added: “The launch of Spectre for retail clients reflects our wider strategy to expand client choice through products that combine flexibility and cost efficiency.”

The firm first introduced Spectre to professional traders in late 2025. The retail launch expands CMC Markets’ multi-asset offering and provides an option for UK retail traders who want exposure to equities, indices and other markets without margin or overnight financing.
